OUTSOURCING ANIMATION TO THE PHILIPPINES

From its beginnings in animation in the 1980’s, the Philippines has been a large player in the animation industry, particularly as a preferred destination for US and European countries seeking to outsource animation services. With an estimated 132 million dollars in revenue for 2014 and with this figure set to increase as video gains more traction online, the Philippines remains primed to become the world’s number one destination for outsourcing animation work. Whether a digital agency looking to outsource animation requirement, producers looking create a cartoon series or pilot episodes, or production studios looking to outsource part of their process, there are a growing number of reasons to consider the Philippines for outsourcing animation projects.

TALENT & CAPABILITIES

Filipinos culturally have a reputation for being very artistic people, and are becoming globally renowned in various creative fields from Visual Design, to Fashion, Web Design, Music, and Animation. Due to the longevity of the industry, and the experience of it’s workforce, animation training in the Philippines is world class.

With many of the leading universities boasting Animation departments and in house studios, pushing the boundaries, and fostering an influx of new talent. Traditionally being a hub for 2D & 3D Animation, Filipino animators are becoming leaders in some of the latest technologies, with artists and studios always looking for new ways to push the boundaries and serve the market. Much of the foundation though is important, with a strong focus still being on hand drawn animation and understanding the fundamentals.

QUALITY

From Mulan, to the Little Mermaid, and the Lion King, Filipino animators have been leaving their mark in Hollywood blockbusters for decades, sometimes quite literally. One fun example is that there were so many Filipinos involved in the production of Finding Nemo that the character “P.Sherman” was thus named after how you would pronounce “Fisherman” with a filipino accent.

Local studios are pushing the boundaries of Animation, creating more content going online, and into some of the most popular video games, with examples like Madden, Medal of Honor, and The Last of Us all involving work done by local studios. The lion’s share of work however has been, and remains to be, in 2D animated content with many of the shows you see on TV or online being produced on Philippine shores.

The Philippines has been a cultural melting pot for hundreds of years. Being the bridge between East and West since the age of sail, we’re no strangers to taking aspects of different cultures and adapting them.
Compounding that, until the middle of the 20th century we were an American colony. This means that like many Americans, we were raised with Cartoon Network, Hollywood, and reruns of The Simpsons and Family guy.English is the primary language spoken in the studio, and we understandpunchlines, metaphors, and sarcasm. This is one of those advantages that doesn’t seem like a big deal, until you’ve experienced the contrary.
My favorite example being one of our partners whose experience outsourcing previously with another studio involved him saying that a scene’s humor was falling flat, and needed more “Pizzazz!” On the next turnaround he was surprised to see all his characters munching on a popular italian dish. They promptly pulled the plug and found us instead.

COST

Being a developing nation, cost of living is more affordable than in many other countries, which can result in significant savings compared to counterparts overseas. With quality animation being an inherently labor intensive process, it allows us to scale more efficiently, and draw from a wider pool of talent than would be possible anywhere else in the world. This translates directly into savings to clients, allowing smaller customers to use animation where it was never a realistic possibility, and allow larger organizations to leverage those efficiencies into their own process.

Want to add animators to do in-between frames? No problem. Need some quick seats to fill in overflow work? Easy. Worried about keeping deadlines and want to work around the clock? The time difference works out in your favor, so that quick work you send us at the end of the day, can be completed by the time you get back to work in the morning.
